Shahana Mukherjee, from the Capital Markets team wraps up 2023, and looks ahead to 2024.
The markets finished quite strongly at the end of 2023, with inflation and interest rates continuing to be the focus. Geopolitical tensions, and concerns around the US debt ceiling negotiations impacted the markets, however global equities produced positive returns, as did Australian equities.
It appears the central banks have been in a rate pause, but now changes are starting to come through and market expectations have changed for 2024. It’s going to be a year of risks and opportunities. Energy prices are volatile and political tensions continue to play a role, which will be critical to how soon central banks can end their tightening of interest rates. 2024 is also an election year for a lot of important economies.
