Your occupation category

How do we decide on the fees you pay for your insurance?

One important factor is your occupation. If you work in a higher risk job, you’ll pay slightly more for your cover. Why? This helps keep insurance affordable for all members.

We use something called an occupation category to determine the level of risk in your job. Each occupation category describes activities you might do as part of your job. The categories are:

  • Blue collar/manual
  • White Collar/non-manual
  • Professional

Most First Super members belong to the Blue collar/manual category

This is where you will automatically go unless you tell us differently.

You should check this is correct, because if you qualify for the White Collar/non-manual category or Professional category, you will be eligible for lower premiums.

Checking your occupation category

Do you think you should be in the White collar/non-manual or Professional occupation category? Complete our questionnaire below to check if you qualify.

Occupation category questionnaire

1. Do you spend at least 80% of your working time in an office environment?
2. Are you solely engaged in a professional, managerial, marketing, accounting, administrative or clerical occupation?
3. Are you engaged in any other occupation which would change your answers to questions 1 and 2?
4. Are you in Active Employment?

If you answered “yes” to questions 1, 2 and 3 & 4 you are eligible for White Collar/non-manual premiums.

5. Are your duties entirely undertaken within an office environment?
6. Do you earn more than $125,000 per year from your profession?
7. Do you hold a senior management role or hold tertiary qualifications relevant to your profession or are you a member of a professional institute or registered government body related to your profession?

If you answered “yes” to questions 1–7, you may be eligible for Professional premiums.

Changing your occupation category

If you are in the Blue Collar/manual category, but you think you should be in the White Collar/non-manual or Professional category, you should apply to change category and pay lower insurance fees.
